Breast Health Screening

Mammography Services

Mammography is one of the most widely studied breast cancer screening tools available today. At Baylor Scott & White Surgical Hospital at Sherman, we offer mammography services designed to provide clear imaging in a comfortable, supportive environment.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women, with approximately 1 in 8 women expected to develop the condition during their lifetime. When identified early, the five-year survival rate may reach 99%, according to the American Cancer Society. Regular screening mammograms are one of the primary ways early-stage breast changes may be identified, often before symptoms are noticeable.

What to Expect During a Mammogram

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast tissue. During the exam, the breast is gently compressed between two plates to produce a clear image. Most screening mammograms take fewer than 30 minutes. Our staff is committed to making the process as comfortable as possible for every patient.

Recommended Screening Guidelines

  • Women with average risk: annual mammograms are generally recommended beginning at age 40 (per American College of Radiology)
  • Women with higher risk (family history, genetic factors): earlier or more frequent screening may be recommended
  • Individual screening schedules should always be discussed with your personal care team

Signs That May Warrant Earlier Evaluation

  • A new lump or change in breast tissue
  • Unexplained nipple discharge or changes
  • Skin dimpling or thickening
  • Family history of BRCA gene mutation
